Everything and Everyone

Poem and Music by Sarah McMahill, ASCAP

SATB (divisi) with violin & cello. Language: English. Also available with piano accompaniment. 2023. Duration: 3:06.

About

"Everything and Everyone" was originally written as a poem about a specific camping trip I had taken in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota. There's always something magical that happens when I go camping. It's grounding and inspiring. The specific trip this poem and music is referring to happened in one awe-struck night! I was drawn away from my tent at night because I saw flashes of bright light. (I found out later that it was heat lightning.) I followed it out to Brule Lake where I found the waters to be completely still. The milky way and millions of stars were reflected on the lake! The view of the stars became slightly obstructed by the northern lights as they danced to the tune of the loons calling to each other. I was so enamored that I woke up my parents to witness the extraordinary beauty.

The poem was part of One Voice Mixed Chorus's concert June of 2023, "ONEarth".

Text:

When moonlight dances on still waters

When curtains of colors drape across the sky
When the songs of the loons serenade
When the night sky is so clear you can see every single star
The beauty and majesty drops me to my knees
And I pray that I’ll never forget how connected I am to
